What is Amitriptyline Used for?

Amitriptyline is a painkiller medication that is used to treat nerve pain, migraines, and tension headaches. It is also used for other purposes, such as depression and cyclic vomiting syndrome (CVS). It was discovered by the large pharmaceutical company Merck in the 1950s and was first licensed to use in the treatment of depression in 1961. It was only later following the discovery of its painkiller properties that it was licensed to treat pain.

Pain can be split between acute and chronic types. Acute pain is when the pain lasts for a short amount of time, this is usually caused by something like a scrape, a fall, surgical pain, or childbirth. Chronic pain is when it lasts for longer, which can be intermittent, and tends to last for three months or more. This is caused by conditions such as fibromyalgia, arthritis, and neuropathic pain, also known as nerve pain. Amitriptyline tends to be used for the latter of these.

Here at fastpharmacy4u.com, we not only sell amitriptyline, but we also sell a wide range of other medications too.

How Amitriptyline Works?

Amitriptyline is a medication that does not start working immediately, it takes several weeks before the full effects can be felt, much like other medications for nerve pain, like pregabalin. However, once the medication does start working, it is extremely effective. Amitriptyline increases two neurotransmitters by stopping 'transporters' from taking the chemicals away from the brain, forcing them to stay for longer.

This naturally increases the amount in the brain as further serotonin and norepinephrine are produced. As a result, over time, pain is eased, and depression is lifted. Clinical studies have shown it works by increasing the amount of two neurotransmitters in the body, serotonin, and norepinephrine. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that is released when we do things that make us feel good and is closely linked to our mood.

It is the chemical that is referred to when people discuss psychological disorders such as depression due to a 'chemical imbalance' in the brain. It also alters the way we experience pain, significantly reducing it. The other neurotransmitter, norepinephrine is also a hormone and is responsible for helping us motivate ourselves. It is also extremely important in managing pain, specifically neuropathic pain.

Available Amitriptyline Dosage

The available amitriptyline dosages are 10mg, 25mg, 50mg, 75mg, 100mg, 150mg.

For depression you should take the following dosage:

  • Adults under the age of 65 - a dose of 75 mg should be taken daily, by dividing the dose throughout the day, between one and four doses. Alternatively, 50 mg to 100 mg can be taken once daily, before bedtime. Whichever method you choose should be the one that is most effective for you and should be consistently maintained.
  • Adults over the age of 65 - the elderly can take the same dose, but it is recommended that you start on a reduced dose first of between 10 mg to 25 mg taken at bedtime. If this is insufficient, the dose should be gradually increased every week.

For nerve pain related to diabetes, the following dose should be taken:

  • A dose of 25 mg should be taken 1 to 2 hours before bedtime. This can be increased if this does not effectively treat the symptoms. It should be increased by 10 mg to 25 mg once a week until symptoms are effectively managed. No more than 100 mg should be taken a day.

For nerve pain related to shingles, and for migraines, the following dose should be taken:

  • You should start on 25 mg per day, taken before bedtime. This can be increased if needed every week, up to a maximum of 125 mg per day.

If you have impaired liver or kidney function, you should take into account the above recommendations, but take a reduced dose.

How to Take Amitriptyline?

As amitriptyline is a hard tablet, it should be taken orally with a glass of water. To reduce the likelihood of side effects, a whole glass of water should be consumed when taking this medication. Unlike other medications, amitriptyline is not affected by food, so it can be taken with or without a meal. It can be taken before bedtime or throughout the day, split between multiple doses.

In those who find it difficult to do the latter, it is recommended that you take it before bedtime, to ensure that you do not miss a dose. Additionally, this can reduce the possibility of suffering from tiredness in the daytime. Taking amitriptyline is not the only way to manage pain, however. You can increase the effectiveness of amitriptyline by utilising other pain management techniques to keep your symptoms under control.

One pain management method is cold and heat. Although people typically associate this with pain that is not neuropathic, cold and heat can also work for nerve pain. It is recommended to use cold when the pain is sharpest, and as the pain subsides, switch to heat. If a homemade heat pack or cold/ice pack does not seem to work, ask a physiotherapist for their more effective versions.

How Long Does Amitriptyline Last?

The effects of amitriptyline usually start to work after 1 to 2 weeks but can take up to 6 to 8 weeks for the full effects to be felt. There are a variety of aspects that can influence how long amitriptyline stays in your system, such as the dosage of medication that you take. The higher the dose of amitriptyline that you take, the longer the effects will last, and the longer it will take for the medication to be eliminated from your body.

Regarding how long it lasts, the half-life of amitriptyline is 10 to 28 hours. This is how long it takes for half of the active ingredient amount contained in the medication to be eliminated from the body. For example, if you took 100 mg of amitriptyline, it would take between 10 to 28 hours until 50 mg was eliminated. It usually takes around five half-lives for a medication to be eliminated from your body entirely, which in the case of Amitriptyline, would be between 2 to 6 days.

Is Amitriptyline Safe?

Amitriptyline is an extremely safe medication and can be taken by a wide range of people. However, certain people should refrain from taking this medication altogether or should take a reduced dose. Some of these people are:

  • If you have an allergy or are hypersensitive to amitriptyline. If this is the case, you should not take this medication under any circumstances. An allergy to medication can result in some severe side effects, such as difficulty breathing, and swelling of the hands, feet, and face. The same applies to people who have had similar reactions, by taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors at the same time as amitriptyline.
  • Those who have a lot of sun exposure. For people who work a lot in the sun or are going to have a lot of sun exposure, it is not recommended that you take this medication. Amitriptyline can increase the likelihood that you will be burnt by the sun, as it increases the skin's sensitivity to UV exposure.

Learn About Amitriptyline Side Effects

All medications have side effects, and amitriptyline is no exception. However, the common side effects of this medication are not severe. Some of the more common side effects are:

  • Xerostomia. More popularly known as 'dry mouth, xerostomia is the most common side effect that can occur when taking amitriptyline. One way to treat or prevent xerostomia is by staying hydrated by increasing the amount of water you drink. Another method is by cutting out liquids that can dehydrate the mouth, such as coffee or alcohol. Additionally, quitting smoking can also help with xerostomia.
  • Hyperhidrosis. Also known as excessive sweating, hyperhidrosis is harmless, but can be slightly embarrassing. We recommend if you suffer from this while taking this medication, you search out stronger deodorants that can assist with the increase in sweat. If this still does not help, it is possible to obtain a medical-grade deodorant directly from your doctor. Furthermore, it is also possible to get Botox injections, which eliminates sweating at the injection sites entirely.

Please note that the above list is not all the side effects that can occur when taking amitriptyline. For a full list of side effects, you should refer to the patient information leaflet contained in the medication packaging.

Why Buy Amitriptyline Online?

There are a whole host of reasons to buy amitriptyline online. Firstly, when obtaining painkillers like amitriptyline in person, you only get the choice of one or two available brands. Online, there is a wide range of different brands and different dosages, as generic medications can be found here that are impossible to find in your local pharmacy, or via your doctor.

This is because generic medications are now able to be produced following the expiry of the original patent on the medication. You also do not need to leave your house to get amitriptyline because as a generic medication, you can order it directly from your home, to be delivered to any address in the United Kingdom, and have it arrive in a matter of days. Not only is this incredibly convenient, but it also saves you from having to talk to anyone face-to-face.

Not everyone is particularly comfortable with discussing their private medical concerns with a stranger, even if that person is a doctor or pharmacist. Even worse if you see someone at the pharmacy that you already know, and they see what you are ordering. This eliminates both concerns, as we use discreet, neutral packaging to post your order directly to you, so not even the post office worker knows what you have ordered.
